The other day someone asked me to think back to where I was a year ago. This reflection was powerful as the difference between a year ago and today is DRAMATIC.
A year ago I was struggling to identify what was the next thing for me. My life and career were stagnant for a long time -- no real career movement and no significant personal goal achievement. I knew I wasn’t living up to my fullest potential and that ultimately I was robbing myself of the impact I wanted to be making in my life.
You know that feeling when you realize you were put here for bigger things?
A year ago, my expectations were pretty low -- just survive the day. Survive working at a job that didn’t inspire me and get through the mommy minutiae without forgetting Pajama Day.
My life felt like a to do list and I was robotically checking the boxes. I had just watched my husband complete Ironman Lake Placid and I was yearning for my own BIG dreams to come true. I was ready to set some of my own audacious goals.
As I became more determined to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I also became less patient. A typical Type A, I wanted to have absolute clarity and a plan that would guarantee success. I spent hours a day trying to think my way to clarity.
The classic overachiever in me wanted results and wanted them now. So, when this clarity thing started stretching from weeks to months, I became frustrated.
How to gain clarity became my first obstacle in my journey from stuck to inspired.
[tweetherder]What I learned along the way is that clarity comes from taking ACTION.[/tweetherder] It doesn’t really matter what size the action is as long as you keep taking steps forward.
Loads of people get stuck in planning mode. They have their journals full of plans but these plans never get executed. Over planning is a good sign you are resisting taking those next steps to get you where you want to be.
How to Gain Clarity in Your Life or Business:
You MUST make space to welcome new opportunities into your life. Remove items that are heavy and might be holding you back. This includes clothing, furniture, and household items. You can also take the time to declutter your digital space like your computer or phone.
Whenever I'm ready for the next thing or want to welcome more joy, abundance, and clarity into MY life, I make decluttering a priority.
Sell items of value and set aside the money to invest in your next thing.
Take a Course
Please note that I said take A course as in ONE. The point isn’t to resist moving forward by using the excuse that you need one more certification or course. The point is to build some confidence and get a better understanding of what you might want to do. I invested in coach training school and it provided a great opportunity to test my idea of starting a coaching business.
Read ONE good book
Much of what keeps us from taking action is fear, self-doubt, and resistance. If this sounds like it might be you, read The War of Art by Steven Pressfield.
Ask Yourself THESE Four Questions
When it comes to clarity and planning, nothing beats these four questions:
- What’s working in your life (or business)?
- What’s not working in your life (or business)?
- What do you want more of in your life (or business)?
- What do you want less of in your life (or business)?
